Navigation

I have played around with different satnav options. Given that I am driving this car for fun rather than to get from A to B in the fastest way, my needs are different from those built in to Google maps etc.

I have been using My Route App (designed for motorcyclists) which has taken me on some interesting explorations of the local countryside. I will try it on a longer trip soon.

Initially, I was using a standard phone holder that sucked itself onto the windscreen. I put it on the passenger side so that it was out of my direct eyeline. Whilst it sort of worked, it wobbled about when driving making it difficult to read and it was only just audible when I used the verbal instructions mode.

I found someone in Ebay doing a 3D printed fixing that goes onto the dash which is specifically designed for sevens. It came with just the bracket (without a clip for holding a phone). I had some poppers left over from the build so fixed a pair of these to the bracket using pop rivets. It seemed easier this way rather than unscrewing the existing poppers and using them to hold the bracket – and now the mount is removeable.

The recommended Brodit clip for the phone was pretty expensive (£30 plus P&P) but looks well made. I decided to try with a cheap clip designed to go onto an air grille (£11 from Halfords). I sawed off the two fingers which go onto the grille and glued the now flat face of the clip onto the bracket.

I also glued some small bits of relatively fine grade sandpaper (from a bicycle puncture repair kit) onto the clamp so that it better grips the phone, as I found it was moving around over time because of the vibration.

It has worked well and the phone is now rigidly held in place and I can still see all the gauges. Result!
