Day Twenty Six – brake bleed

Time spent: 3h
Cumulative time: 117h
Main activities:  bleed the brakes, wheels on and axle stands off

Getting the brakes bled took a while.  It was initially rather puzzling that I had bled all the brakes and the pedal still felt really spongy.  Then a quick check back with the blogs I have been following and I realised that there are two brake nipples on the front brakes.  It took several rounds of the bleeding process but eventually the brakes are feeling reasonably firm which is encouraging.

With that done, I thought I would get the wheels on which was fairly quick and easy.  So, I thought, why not get it off the axle stands and let the car stand on its own tyres.  I had anticipated that this might be a bit of a long process and I was keen to take my time (for safety reasons as much as anything).  So I raised the car up enough to allow me to move the axle stands and then let them down by two notches and lowered the car onto the shortened stands.

This enabled me to remove the jack and take off the extension piece off.  Then I lifted the car once more with the shortened jack and removed the axle stands and let the front wheels come all the way down to the ground.  My jack folded enough to allow me to move it out from under the front of the car (just).

The plan was to do the same with the rear.  But it wasn’t going to be that simple.  The clearance at the rear is less (particularly as I have the lowered floor).  I was lowering the car very slowly  and then realised that there wasn’t going to be enough space to allow me to pull out the jack.  Unfortunately I realised this when the car was too close to the jack handle to allow me to operate the jack to lift it back up again.

I was able to borrow a scissor jack from my wonderful neighbour (thanks Rob!) and used that to lift one side of the car enough to safely remove the trolley jack and finally let the car down using the scissor jack.  Phew.  No damage done.

But it did make me realise how close the ground clearance is (I can see the bolts holding the seats in place are going to get damaged pretty quickly once I am on the road).  Speed bumps are going to be a serious hazard.
