Day Twenty One – exhaust and rear wing

Time spent: 3h
Cumulative time: 99h
Main activities:  Exhaust, rear and front wing tidy up

Didn’t have much time today so did mostly small houskeeping jobs.  A package arrived this  morning with the missing lamda sensor and the angle bracket for exhaust support.  It didn’t take long to get these installed and its nice to see the exhaust sitting there now that everything is in place for the system.  I have to say, it does look a bit precarious, with the exhaust cantilevered off the bobbin mounts adding a noticeable bend to them.

I also have a guard (to stop your passenger burning their leg presumably) but no instructions and no fittings.  I have asked for some clarification on that. [it turned out this was sent in error and I ended up sending it back to Caterham]

I tided up the wiring behind the back lights.  The Assembly Guide indicates that you fix a P clip to the back of the light fitting but the sizes are wrong for that so I fixed the P clip to a bolt holding the wing onto the body work.  Annoyingly, this bolt happens to be the one that is at the same level as the boot floor.  So I had to unscrew the boot floor again to allow me to undo and fix the P clip.

There is an alarming amount of exposed wire around the plug which I decided to wrap extensively in insulating tape.

Front Wing Final Fix

The front wing is proving a real pain.  Try as I might, I cant get a grommet to go into the hole where the wire exits the wingstay.  I know this is one of those things that you have to have for the IVA so I will keep trying and, after destroying numerous grommets, I managed to cut one sufficiently to get it to fit. The problem was the thickness of the metal of the wingstay is more than that of the notch around the grommet. I enlarged the notch of the grommet which did the trick and then applied copious amounts of superglue to make sure it stayed put.

With everything in place, I could connect up all the lights. The wiring colours are not entirely consistent but this is what seemed to work.

The 170 has two spare 2-pin connectors that are not actually used.

Mystery wire

I noticed a wire poking out from under the engine cover near the expansion bottle.  On checking with Caterham, this is something that I need to fix to the engine block.  Not something I can find a reference to in the Assembly Guide at all – it would have been an easy one to miss.
