Day Twenty Nine – IVA mirrors

Time spent: 1h
Cumulative time: 123h
Main activities:  IVA Mirrors

Whilst I wait for my post build check, I have got on with the mirrors. You need to take out the glass in the provided mirrors so that you can get to the fixings. There is nothing about how to do this in the Assembly Guide but a quick chat with Caterham has suggested that I use heat to soften the glue that holds the glass in place.

So I dunked the mirrors in a bowl of hot water from the tap and sure enough after a couple of minutes the glue was soft enough for me to pry off the glass without it breaking. Obviously, this could go horribly wrong, so I was very gentle but the glass came out fairly easily with very little force being needed.

I could then get to the nut on the back of the mirror stem and remove that, replacing it with the one that came with the IVA pack. I used a hot-melt glue gun to stick the glass back into the mirrors as I didn’t trust the glue that was left inside the mirror shell.

All that was then needed was to fix this into the side of the windscreen. But I have decided not to do this for the time being because there is a danger that I will knock into them whilst the car is parked in the garage which would not be good. Should be a 2 min job to fix them in place when it is time for the IVA.

I have brought a set of ‘Eccles’ mirror mounts, which members of the Club occasionally sell, which I will fix (along with new convex mirrors) once the IVA is done.
