Day Twenty Two – Interior

Time spent: 3h
Cumulative time: 102h
Main activities:  Carpets, tunnel cover

As the sun was shining and there was minimal wind, I thought today would be ideal to fix the carpets.  It’s a bit of a jigsaw puzzle for the boot (which I have decided to leave for the time being as there are more pressing jobs) but the tunnel sides and the bulkhead behind the seats are fairly self-explanatory.

I choose today because I didn’t want to work indoors with the adhesive fumes so I pushed the car outside.  I did quite a lot of masking of nearby areas although the glue spray wasn’t as scattergun as I had expected.  It was a relatively easy job with glue (I used some heavy duty stuff) applied to both surfaces and left to dry for a couple of minutes.  I found I had enough movement to jiggle things around until everything was in the right place before the glue finally went off.

The trickiest task was getting the tunnel cover on. In the end, I undid the ends of the handbrake cables at the brake end and lifted up the handbrake as far as it could go.  That gave me just enough wiggle room to get the handbrake through the gaiter.

I had initially through you could get the tunnel cover over the handbrake with the cover at an angle to the axis of the car.  But you cant – it is such a tight fit fore and aft, that you can only really put on the tunnel cover on with it fully over the tunnel.  It was a fiddly job but it was nice to see the tunnel cover in place and I took great pleasure in fitting the gear knob at the same time.  It is becoming more like a car every day.
